Cameroon and ABWE Canada
The Spiritual Need in Cameroon
Nestled in the crook of Africa’s west coast, Cameroon is home to more than 200 different linguistic groups, with French and English as its official languages. The country is often referred to as “Africa in miniature” for its geological and cultural diversity. It has a rapidly-growing population that is 40 percent Catholic, 30 percent Protestant, and 18 percent Muslim, though Cameroon’s traditional religion, based in animism, is still practiced by many.
These animistic beliefs are deeply engrained in Cameroon’s culture and have been intermingled with practices of the other religions. Their traditional religion believes in a supreme creator, along with spirits, ancestor worship, magic, and traditional medicine. These beliefs and witchcraft are pervasive in Cameroon’s culture, and Cameroonians desperately need someone to teach them about the one true God who loves them unconditionally. Will you be the one to tell them?
