Ruler Supreme, Who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our dominion within Thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in Thee,
A lasting, rich reward,
As waiting for the Better Day
We ever stand on guard.

Do you recognize those words? I hope that you do. Those words are the fourth verse of our national anthem “O Canada.” Thankfully, we, Canadians, were able to celebrate the sesquicentennial (the 150th anniversary) of our country this month.

I thought of these words as our national anthem was being played at a park in our neigbourhood immediately before we watched a spectacular display of fireworks that celebrated Canada becoming a dominion. While contemplating this verse, I thought of its truth and how it relates to Christianity and especially missions in a number of ways.

First, we need to remember that God rules in the affairs of men. Daniel 4:17b – “. . . to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom He will and sets over it the lowliest of men.”

Second, God hears our prayers. 1 John 5:14 – “And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us.”

Third, God holds all things in His hands. Psalm 24:1 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

Fourth, our rewards are found in the Lord. Hebrews 11:6 – “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”

Fifth, we need to stand firm in our faith. Ephesians 6:10-11 – “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

In His Service,

Minne Bouma
